The Pirates: Whitworth (5-7 overall, 2-4 NWC) lost twice at home last week.
The Pirates led Willamette 11-8 in the third quarter and looked like they might pull out their first-ever victory over the Bearcats on Friday. But Willamette outscored Whitworth 9-1 the rest of the way for a 17-12 victory. Campbell Vincent had six goals and an assist to lead the Bucs, while Sierra Witte totaled three goals and two assists. Megan Whitman finished with five draw controls, four ground balls, two caused turnovers, one goal and one assist. Kenzie Hemman had nine of the Pirates' 19 draw controls. Sage Fosnock started in goal and allowed seven goals with four saves in 24 minutes. Kayla Jones came off the bench for 36 minutes and gave up 10 goals with six assists.
Whitworth could not overcome a slow start in Saturday's 20-16 loss to Lewis & Clark. The Pioneers outscored the Pirates 7-2 in the first quarter. Whitworth trailed 16-8 late in the third period before pulling within 19-16 with three minutes to play. The Bucs could not complete the comeback. Vincent totaled seven goals and two assists to set Pirate team records for single-game goals and points (9). Megan Whitman tied her career-high with four goals to go along with seven draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Sierra Witte scored twice, dished four assists and had six draw controls. Kenzie Hemman scored twice and grabbed 11 draw controls with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Standings update: Whitworth is in sixth in the Northwest Conference standings with a 2-4 record. George Fox (6-0) leads the way, one game ahead of Whitman (5-1), including a win over the Blues. Linfield and Willamette are tied for third at 4-2, with Lewis & Clark fifth (3-3). With two wins this weekend, the Pirates could possibly end up in a tie for fourth place. The top four teams make the 2025 NWC tournament, but tiebreakers would not favor Whitworth.
The Opponents: Puget Sound is 4-10 overall and 1-5 in the NWC heading into Saturday's match. Last weekend the Loggers lost 19-3 at George Fox and 10-9 in overtime at Pacific (Ore.). PLU scores 4.15 goals per game (9th in the NWC) and allows 16.85 goals against (also 9th). The Lutes are in their first season as a varsity program. The Coach: Noelle Brouillard is in her seventh season as head coach at Whitworth, the only seasons the Pirates have been a varsity program. Since the restart following COVID, Whitworth has shown dramatic improvement each year. The Bucs went 0-10 in 2021.
