The Pirates: Whitworth (1-2) is coming off a bye weekend following the WhitLax Classic on March 1-2.
The Pirates earned their first win of the 2025 season by defeating Eastern Oregon 26-4 in the opener of the WhitLax Classic on March 1st. Whitworth set school records for most goals and most assists in a match, and for largest margin of victory. Kenzie Hemman set a career-high with five goals while adding a team-high nine draw controls. Campbell Vincent finished with four goals and set a team record with five assists for a total of nine points. Sierra Witte posted four goals and three assists, while Peyton Green had four goals, four ground balls and three caused turnovers. All three Pirate goalkeepers were able to play significant minutes in the match.
Whitworth defeated a club team from Montana State University 15-11 on the second day of the WhitLax Classic. Because the opponent was not a varsity-level team, the result does not count toward the Pirates' won-loss record, nor do the stats. Vincent led the Bucs with four goals and two assists, while Witte had three goals and three assists. Hemman and Kenison Turner also scored three goals apiece for Whitworth. Sage Fosnock made seven saves.
The Opponents: Whitman comes into Saturday's match with the same record as Whitworth at 1-2. In addition, the Blues have played the exact same opponents. Following an exhibition 16-13 win over the MSU club and a 19-2 victory over Eastern Oregon at the WhitLax Classic, Whitman lost 10-8 at Willamette and 14-8 at George Fox this past weekend.
Lola McConaghy, a first-year attacker, leads the team with eight goals in 2025. Sarah Hawkins, another first-year attack player, has four goals and six assists for a team-high ten points.
Whitworth swept Whitman in 2024, winning 20-9 in Walla Walla in March before pulling out a 13-12 decision at home in April.
Hot Start: Whitworth has scored 49 goals in three matches and set several school records along the way. The 26 goals against Eastern Oregon broke the previous school mark of 22 goals against Whitman set on March 6, 2022. The 14 assists vs. EOU topped the previous record of 11 assists vs. Pacific (Ore.) on April 20 of last season.
No Sophomore Slump: Campbell Vincent, who led the Pirates in goals scored in 2024, is off to an even better start in 2025. She has already tied her own school record with six goals in the season-opening match at George Fox, the third time in her career she has reached that mark. She set a new team record with five assists vs. Eastern Oregon, surpassing the previous record of four shared by Abby Hahn and Rebecca Irwin. Through only three matches, Vincent leads the NWC in goals per game (4.33) and points per game (6.33).
The Coach: Noelle Brouillard is in her seventh season as head coach at Whitworth, the only seasons the Pirates have been a varsity program. Since the restart following COVID, Whitworth has shown dramatic improvement each year. The Bucs went 0-10 in 2021. They won five times in 2022, went 6-12 in 2023 and broke through with a 12-6 record in 2024, including an 8-4 mark in the NWC.
Brouillard came to Whitworth from the University of Scranton, where she was the top women's lacrosse assistant coach for two seasons. Scranton had a 22-13 record over the two years Brouillard served as assistant coach. The Royals advanced to the Landmark Conference tournament championship game in 2017 and finished with an 11-6 record. She played for four seasons at Allegheny College (Pa.), where she was a two-time team captain in 2012 and 2013.
Looking ahead: The Pirates will head to the Chicago area for spring break matches on March 22-23 at Illinois Tech and North Central.
