SALEM, Ore. – After dropping two of three doubles contests, visiting Whitworth swept the six singles matches in a 7-2 men's tennis victory at Willamette on Saturday.
The Pirates finish their Northwest Conference schedule at 4-4 and they improved to 5-12 overall. The Bearcats (0-12 overall, 0-8 NWC) are still searching for their first victory of the season. They get their final chance when they host Whitworth in a season-ending non-conference match on Sunday.
Kincaid Norris and Jonathan Hutley rolled to an 8-2 win at #2 doubles for the Pirates. The Bucs dropped a point at #3 where Willamette's Luke Hiserman and Jordan Megiveron edged Brenden Archer and Ethan Warring 8-6. The #1 doubles match was even closer. Whitworth's Ethan Violette and Nathan Tjelle fell in a tiebreaker (7-3) to Andrew Kabacy and Gene Perle-Jones.
Hutley tied the match 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-1 in over Quentin Nigbur at #3 singles. Archer gave Whitworth the lead with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at #6. Tjelle made it three singles wins by topping Hiserman 6-2, 6-1 at #4 singles. Cameron Brewer clinched the team victory with his 6-4, 6-0 win at #5 singles.
The closest singles match came at the top of the ladder where Violette edged Kabacy 7-6, 0-6, 1-0 (10-8).
