Men's tennis impresses at fall ITAs

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Pirate men's tennis started the 2026-27 season off with an impressive performance at the ITA Division III Northwest Regional Championships this weekend, hosted by Whitman College in Walla Walla.

All eight Northwest Conference team competed in the tournament that consisted of a doubles bracket, a singles "A" bracket, and singles "B" bracket, including several consolation rounds.

Matt Froslan and Ryan Ashley led the way on the doubles courts, winning three matches and reaching the semifinals. To get there, the Whitworth pair upset the second seeded George Fox duo of Zach Moore and Aiden Cruz 8-7 (7-5). Noah Sutin and Kaden Sigurdsson from Lewis & Clark, who went on to win the doubles tournament, ended Froslan and Ashley's run 8-1.

Freshman Peter Farley and Matt Hossack also performed well, winning two matches by way of tiebreaker before falling in the quarterfinals to the runner-up Whitman pair. First-year Spencer Shade made his debut alongside Matthew Morrison, also earning a pair of match wins before falling 8-5 in the round of 16.

On the singles courts, Hossack and teammate Landon LaBrie battled their way through the "B" Flight and met in the flight final. Both players battled to three set wins in the semifinal match before Hossack got the best of LaBrie 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 to take the "B" title.

Connor Judson, who had a standout freshman season a year ago, led the Bucs in Flight "A." He earned a dominant win in the round of 32 before falling to Keita Shoji in the round of 16. Peter Farley earned a 6-0, 1-6, 1-0 (10-8) tiebreaking win in his singles debut. Ashley and Froslan also took home first-round wins.

After a tiebreaking loss in the "B" flight, Braeden Butler earned a dominant win in the consolation bracket.

The Pirates will take their momentum through the winter and be back in action this spring.
