TACOMA, Wash. – Whitworth University men's tennis ended a four-match losing streak with an 8-1 win at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday afternoon at the Sprinker Tennis Center.
The Pirates improved to 3-10 overall and 2-3 in the NWC while the Lutes dropped to 2-5, 1-5.
Kincaid Norris and Jonathan Hutley gave the Bucs an early lead with an 8-2 win over Jake Kim and Branson Near at #2 doubles. But PLU tied it when Michael Campbell and Marcus Lee topped Ethan Violette and Nathan Tjelle 8-4 at #1 doubles. Once Brenden Archer and Cameron Brewer won 8-2 at #3 doubles, the Pirates would not drop another point the rest of the way.
Violette edged Campbell 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-2 at #1 singles in one of two matches that went three sets. Hutley got by Lee 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 at #3 singles in the other one.
No other Pirate player dropped a set in his singles match, including Norris, who won 6-4, 6-0 at #2 singles.
Whitworth will be back in action next weekend at home against Puget Sound.
