PORTLAND, Ore. – The Whitworth men's tennis team dropped both matches at Lewis & Clark College of the weekend. The Pioneers won Saturday's Northwest Conference counter 9-0. L&C took Sunday's non-conference match 7-2.
Whitworth dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-1 in the NWC while L&C improved to 3-3, 2-1.
Little went right for the Pirates on Saturday. The Pioneers swept the three doubles contests. Nathan Tjelle and Brenden Archer had the closest match, losing 8-4 at #3 doubles to Daniel Lane and Miles Stone.
L&C went on to sweep the six singles contests. Only Jonathan Hutley's match at #4 singles went more than two sets. Hutley fell 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 to Shane Lynette.
The Pioneers again won all three doubles matches on Sunday. Tjelle and Hutley teamed at #3 and came close before falling 8-6 to Lane and Stone. Ethan Violette and Cameron Brewer were beaten 8-4 by Ramez Attia and Lynette at #1 doubles.
Whitworth avoided a second straight shutout by winning a pair of singles matches. Kincaid Norris claimed a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Lynette at #3 singles, while Tjelle topped Atticus Pallock 6-3, 6-3 at #6 singles.
Hutley went three sets for the second straight day, falling 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) at #4. L&C's Kristian Peev edged Violette 7-6 (4), 7-5 at #1 singles.
Whitworth will host defending NWC champion Whitman in a pair of matches next Saturday.
