SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University closed out the 2018 men's tennis season with a 7-2 win over visiting Pacific Lutheran on Sunday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates finish 4-14 overall and 4-4 in the Northwest Conference, while the Lutes drop to 6-11, 2-6.
Whitworth took a 2-1 lead after doubles. Ben Bethards and Kincaid Norris topped Chan Thourk and Justin DeMattos 8-4 at #2 doubles, while Ian Fisher and Nick Hughes rolled past Branson Near and John Woelfel 8-2 at #3. PLU's Niko Convento and Jake Kim defeated Jake Bethards and Thomas Remington 8-3 at #1.
PLU tied the match 2-2 when Convento knocked off Jake Bethards 6-1, 6-3 at #1 singles. But then it was all Whitworth the rest of the way.
Fisher beat DeMattos 6-2, 6-2 at #2 and Ben Bethards rallied past Kim 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 to give the Pirates a 4-2 lead. Norris clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Thourk at #4 singles.
Remington swept Branson 6-0, 6-0 at #5 and Hughes defeated Woelfel 6-3, 6-1 at #6.
Fisher, Whitworth's only senior on the roster, played his final match for the Pirates.
