TACOMA, Wash. – Whitworth University stretched its winning streak in men's tennis to three in a row with an 8-1 victory at Puget Sound on Sunday at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
The Pirates' winning streak is its longest of the season and the team improved to 5-11 overall and 5-6 in the NWC. The Loggers fell to 0-11, 0-10.
Whitworth swept the three doubles matches. Jeffrey Vulis and Ian Fisher had the easiest victory with an 8-3 win over Jacob Kompolt and Chris Severt at #2 doubles. Caleb Hughes and Shane Sandlin earned the closest doubles win with an 8-5 victory over Joe McRoberts and Riley Inn at #1. Jake Bethards and Nick Hughes topped Chet Selis and Ben Colson 8-4 at #3 doubles.
Most of the six singles matches were over fairly quickly. Bethards shut out Selis 6-0, 6-0 at #4 singles, while Fisher nearly duplicated that accomplishment with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kompolt at #3. Vulis rolled past Yuwang Ha 6-3, 6-0 at #5 and Nick Hughes dominated Colson 6-1, 6-2 at #6.
There were two close singles matches and the teams each won one. Caleb Hughes edged Inn 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-2) at #2 singles, while McRoberts slipped past Shandlin 7-5, 6-3 at the top of the ladder.
Whitworth's match with Lewis-Clark State, originally scheduled for April 12th, has been cancelled. The Pirates will play next on Saturday, April 15th by hosting Linfield College.
