PARKLAND, Wash. – Whitworth opened a three-match road trip to Tacoma with a 6-3 Northwest Conference men's tennis victory at Pacific Lutheran on Friday night at the Lakewood Racket Club.
The Pirates ended a four match losing skid and improved to 3-11 overall and 3-6 in the NWC. The Lutes fell to 3-11, 3-7.
Whitworth swept the three doubles matches. Jake Bethards and Nick Hughes rolled to an 8-1 win at #3 doubles over Chan Thourk and Keith Petitt. Shane Sandlin and Caleb Hughes won 8-3 at #1 doubles, while Jeffrey Vulis and Ian Fisher won by the same score at #2 doubles.
The teams split the six singles matches with PLU claiming wins at #1 through #3 and the Pirates earning victories at 4th through 6th singles. Bethards won 6-4, 6-1 at #4 singles, while Vulis earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at #5 singles. Hughes claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory at #6.
Sandlin lost by a 6-3, 6-3 score at #1 singles and Fisher fell 6-4, 6-4 at #3.
Whitworth and PLU will play again on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
