SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University closed in on a fourth place finish and a berth in the 2016 Northwest Conference men's tennis tournament with a 9-0 win over visiting Pacific Lutheran on Saturday afternoon at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates improved to 11-7 overall and 7-4 in the NWC while the Lutes dropped to 1-14, 1-10.
Today's match was rarely in doubt. The closest contest of the day came at #1 doubles where Whitworth's Drew Brigham and Drew Adams topped James Okubo and Alberto Leal 8-5. The Bucs made it a sweep of the three doubles contests when Shane Sandlin and Caleb Hughes cruised past Noel Oteng-Mensah and Jeremy Marsh 8-2 at #2 doubles. Blake Miller and Layne Ryerson dominated the PLU pair of John Woelfel and DJ Pekoc 8-1 at #3.
The team victory was quickly decided after Ryerson raced past Marsh 6-1, 6-0 at #3 singles and Sandlin beat Leal by the same set scores at #5 singles.
In fact, Whitworth did not give up a set to the Lutes as Brigham (#1), Miller (#2), Adams (#4) and Hughes (#6) all won their matches in straight sets.
The Pirates will conclude the regular season by hosting Puget Sound on Sunday at 10:00 am.
