Spokane, Wash. – The Whitworth University men's tennis team swept visiting Linfield 9-0 for the Pirates' second shutout of the Wildcats this season.
Eight matches into the schedule, Whitworth has now evened its record at 4-4 and the Bucs are 4-2 in the NWC. Linfield dropped to 2-8, 1-5.
The Pirates got through the doubles matches quickly for a 3-0 lead. Jhun Gumboc and Blake Miller defeated the Wildcat team of Charlie Farrenkopf and Liam Spearnak 8-3 at #3 doubles for the first Whitworth point of the match.
Caleb Hughes and Shane Sandlin won by the exact same score against Linfield's Carter Pentz and Jacob Mangan at #2 doubles. Then Drew Adams and Drew Brigham doubled up Trent Prussing and Tim Hawkins 8-4 at #1 doubles.
It didn't take Whitworth long to clinch the team victory. Layne Ryerson defeated Hawkins 6-1, 6-1 at #3 singles for a 4-0 lead. Then Miller beat Pentz 6-0, 6-1 at #2 singles to secure the insurmountable 5-0 margin.
Brigham topped Prussing 6-2, 7-6 (3) at #1 singles in the only singles match of the day that threatened to go more than two sets.
Sandlin swept by Farrenkopf 6-0, 6-0 at #5 singles, while Adams dropped Mangan 6-0, 6-3 at #4 singles. Gumboc finished off the Pirates' sweep with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Spearnak at #6 singles.
Whitworth will be back in action on Sunday morning when the Pirates host Willamette University.
