SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth closed its 2015 men's tennis season in impressive fashion with a 9-0 victory over visiting Pacific Lutheran on Sunday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
In what was set up as a potential battle to determine fifth place in the final Northwest Conference standings, the Pirates had no trouble with the Lutes and won to post a final record of 6-11 overall and 6-6 in the NWC. PLU finished the season 5-13, 5-7. The Bucs had also defeated the Lutes 9-0 on the road in their previous meeting this season.
Whitworth easily won all three doubles matches. Drew Brigham and Matt Goebel only lost a single service game while dispatching Sam Stadter and Sam Angel 8-1 at #1 doubles. Drew Adams and Shane Sandlin won by exactly the same score against Noel Oteng-Mensah and Jeremy Marsh at #2 doubles. Blake Miller and Caleb Hughes defeated James Okubo and Chris Erkkila 8-2 at #3.
Whitworth quickly clinched the team victory as all six singles matches occurred simultaneously. Adams blanked Okubo 6-0, 6-0 at #3 singles to give Whitworth a 4-0 lead. Then Hughes beat Erkkila 6-2, 6-0 at #6 to pick up the fifth point.
But Whitworth would continue to put away singles matches to finish with the clean-sweep. Miller beat Angel 6-2, 6-1 at #2 and Sandlin topped Oteng-Mensah 6-2, 6-3 at #4. Goebel doubled up Marsh 6-3, 6-3 at #5.
The only match to go more than one set came at the top of the ladder when Brigham defeated Stadter 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5).
The Pirates finished their final weekend with consecutive 9-0 wins over Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.
Goebel participated in his final match at Whitworth. He, along with Chris Engelmann who is injured, are the only two Pirates who will graduate this spring.
