SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth men's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 win over visiting Puget Sound without allowing a set on Saturday morning.
The Pirates improved to 5-11 overall and 5-6 in the NWC. The Loggers dropped to 1-12, 0-12.
Whitworth had little trouble while sweeping the three doubles matches. Drew Brigham and Matt Goebel defeated Joe McRoberts and Abe Noyes 8-1 at #1 doubles. Shane Sandlin and Drew Adams topped Daniel Deuel and Colton Wright 8-2 at #2. Blake Miller and Caleb Hughes got by Jacob Kompolt and Chet Selis by the same 8-2 score at #3 doubles.
The Pirates won all six singles matches in straight sets. Brigham beat McRoberts 6-1, 6-1 at the top of the ladder, while Miller defeated Deuel 6-0, 6-3 at #2.
Sandlin nearly shut out Wright at #4 singles (6-1, 6-0), while Jeffry Vulis did the same to Chris Severt 6-0, 6-1 at #6.
Hughes won the closest match of the day, topping Kompolt 7-5, 6-2 at #5.
Whitworth will conclude the season on Saturday with a conference match against Pacific Lutheran at 10:00 am, then an exhibition game against CC of Spokane at 3:00 pm.
