SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth men's tennis team closed out the weekend with an 8-1 win over visiting Willamette on Sunday morning.
The Pirates improved to 4-10 overall and 4-6 in the NWC. The Bearcats dropped to 3-12, 3-6.
Whitworth swept through the doubles matches. Matt Goebel and Blake Miller made quick work of Samuel Rowe and Blake Brash at #3, winning 8-1. Drew Brigham and Shane Sandlin defeated Jack Schreiber and Gunner Lee 8-3 at #1. Drew Adams and Caleb Hughes won the by same 8-3 score over Shrujan Kalidindi and Derek Lund at #2.
The Pirates quickly clinched the team victory with wins at #1 and #6 in singles. Brigham beat Lee 6-1, 6-2 at the top of the ladder to increase the team score to 4-0. Then Ryan Adams closed out the team win with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rowe at #6.
Caleb Hughes shutout Kalidindi 6-0, 6-0 at #4 singles. Jeff Vulis picked up his first career singles victory in his first career singles match as a Pirate, defeating Lund 6-2, 6-0 at #5.
Whitworth will close out its season this weekend at home. The Bucs will host Lewis-Clark State in a non-conference match on Wednesday, then they host Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran on Saturday and Sunday.
