TACOMA, Wash. – The Whitworth men's tennis team rolled to its initial win of the 2015 season, defeating host Puget Sound 8-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates improved to 1-5 overall this season and 1-3 against NWC opponents. The Loggers dropped to 0-7, 0-7.
Whitworth took two of the three doubles matches to grab early momentum. Matt Goebel and Drew Adams beat Daniel Deuel and Chris Severt 8-3 at #2 doubles, while Ryan Adams and Caleb Hughes topped Colton Wright and Jacob Kompolt 8-6 at #3 doubles.
UPS got its only point of the match when Andrew Struzenberg and Joe McRoberts edged Drew Brigham and Shane Sandlin 8-5 at #1 doubles.
Whitworth swept the six singles matches to win going away. Brigham beat Deuel 6-4, 6-3 at #1 and Sandlin got by Wright 7-5, 6-2 at #3.
Chris Engelmann pulled out the closest singles match of the afternoon when he rallied to defeat McRoberts 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at #2 singles. Goebel also rallied from behind to win in three sets at #5 singles, defeating Struzenberg 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Drew Adams beat Abe Noyes 6-3, 6-2 at #4 and Hughes got by Severt 6-3, 7-5 at #6.
Whitworth will conclude its Tacoma trip with a match at PLU on Sunday.
