Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. - Micheal Ramos scored or assisted each goal scored by Whitworth, tying two school records and leading the Pirates to a 7-1 win over George Fox on Saturday.
Whitworth improved to 7-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the Northwest Conference. The Bruins suffered their third-straight loss, falling to 2-5-1, 0-3.
Ramos recorded a hat trick to go along with four assists, collecting 10 total points and tying the school record for points in a match set by Jace Jones in 1999 against California Maritime. His four assists tied him with Ali Seyedali (vs. Pacific in 2005) and Ben Wickert (vs. California Maritime in 1999) for most assists in a game.
"This year he's been fantastic, for sure," head coach Morgan Cathey said. "He's a special player and today he showed he's not just a special player -- he's a special character."
Whitworth took an early lead in the 14th minute as Ramos scored an unassisted goal. Less than 30 seconds later, Ramos assisted Karl Muelheims' second goal of the season on a cross. A penalty kick converted in the 28th minute by Ramos gave the Pirates a 3-0 lead, which would hold for the rest of the first half.
The Pirates built the advantage to 4-0 in the 57th minute as Ramos assisted Rylan Berriman's third goal of the season. The Bruins cut into the deficit in the 75th minute as Connor Sigmon scored off a cross from Miguel Lopez Ixta. However, the Pirates then scored three goals within a 10-minute span to put the match well out of reach.
Kyle Morris scored his first career goal for the Pirates in the 79th minute off another cross from Ramos. Several minutes later Ramos completed the hat trick, scoring in a one-on-one opportunity against the George Fox keeper in the 83rd minute. The Bucs scored once more in the 89th minute as Sam Engle netted his third goal of the year, assisted by Ramos once again.
"We talked before the game and said we've not lacked the ability to create, it's been the final touch that needs to get better," Cathey said. "This week we worked hard on the last touch and finish, and it showed today."
Whitworth fired 21 shots in the match, compared with eight for the Bruins. The Pirates also had a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 3-1 edge on corner kicks.
Cathey said he was pleased with the shots-on-goal to goals-scored conversion rate, as Whitworth scored seven goals off 14 on-target shots.
Timmy Costa made three saves for the Pirates, and has allowed just one goal in 180 minutes of play over the last two matches.
With the performance, Ramos now leads the NWC in goals scored (9), assists (9) and total points (27). Cathey noted Ramos' ability to involve his teammates, commending the forward for finishing with more assists than goals in the match.
Whitworth scored seven goals in a match for the first time since 2005. The Pirates scored seven goals on two occasions during the 2005 season, against Pacific (Ore.) and George Fox. Ramos' hat trick also marked the first three-goal performance by a Whitworth player since 2005.
The Pirates are back in action at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at Pacific (Ore.).
