Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - A second-half goal by Sam Engle was countered by Linfield with just under 15 minutes remaining, and neither team could score in overtime as the Pirates and Wildcats played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon in the NWC opener for both schools.
Whitworth (5-0-1, 0-0-1 NWC), ranked at No. 6 nationally in the latest D3Soccer.com poll, tied for the first time in 2014 following five wins to begin the season. Linfield (2-2-1, 0-0-1) snapped a two-game losing streak with the draw.
Engle put Whitworth on the scoreboard in the 62nd minute with his second goal of the season, scoring on a cross slightly redirected by Micheal Ramos. Eric Espinoza sent a cross in from the right side of the field to Engle, who was waiting from close range at the far post after Ramos redirected the cross on a header attempt.
The Wildcats responded on a set piece in the 77th minute, as Jake Baker sent the ball into the box off a free kick and found Dylan Leathers, who scored on a header inside a crowded box past Tony Watters.
Linfield capitalized in a match that saw Whitworth produce the majority of the offensive opportunities. The Pirates outshot Linfield 29-16 and had an 11-4 edge in shots on goal. Whitworth also held a 14-2 advantage on corner kicks.
"We created some good chances early and we didn't produce," head coach Morgan Cathey said. "The reality is you're going to leave the gate open and we left the gate open."
Grant Loriaux made 10 saves for the Wildcats, including a key leaping save in overtime when Spencer Wolfe nearly found the back of the net off a powerful shot from well outside the box to the upper right corner of the goal. Watters recorded three saves for Whitworth.
Whitworth returns to action Sunday against the Willamette Bearcats, while Linfield will take on Whitman.
