SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth closed the 2014 men's tennis season with an 8-1 win over visiting Linfield on Saturday afternoon at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The victory clinched a winning record against Northwest Conference opponents for the Pirates (8-10 overall, 7-5 NWC). The Wildcats, who brought only five players into the match, finished the season 0-14, 0-12.
Matt Goebel and John Talbot, playing at #1 doubles for the second time this season and the second match in a row, defeated Lukas Kleinman and Kelsey Rosborough 8-3. Micah Roos and Tim Hawkins gave Linfield its only point of the match with an 8-4 win over Troy Patterson and Drew Adams at #2 doubles. The Pirates picked up a point at #3 doubles by default.
The five singles matches went fairly quickly. Drew Brigham got by Roos 6-0, 6-4 at #1 while Talbot topped Rosborough 6-1, 6-1 at #2.
Blake Miller defeated Kleinman 6-1, 6-0 at #3 and Dustin McConnell rolled by Hawkins 6-1, 6-2 at #4. Adams shut out Alex Wisthoff 6-0, 6-0 at #5 singles.
McConnell, Patterson and Talbot, the three Pirate seniors, played in their final matches at Whitworth
