Pirates Beat Short-handed Bearcats 8-1

SALEM, Ore. – Whitworth had three points in hand before the match even started and the Pirates went on to defeat visiting Willamette 8-1 in men's tennis on Friday at the Scotford Tennis Center.

The Pirates ended a four-match losing streak and improved to 7-10 overall and 6-5 in the NWC.  The Bearcats (2-13, 2-9) arrived at the match with only four players and had to forfeit one doubles match and two singles matches.

John Talbot and Matt Goebel played #1 doubles for the first time this season and came away with an 8-3 win over Will Cooper and Shrujan Kalidindi.  Troy Patterson and Dustin McConnell won by the same score over Jack Schreiber and Gunnar Lee at #2 doubles.

Drew Brigham beat Cooper 6-2, 6-2 at #1 singles, while Blake Miller rolled past Schreiber 6-0, 6-1 at #2 singles.  Chris Engelmann rallied from behind in the first set and topped Lee 6-4, 6-1 at #3 singles.

Willamette's only point came when Shane Sandlin had to retire with an ankle injury at #4 singles, giving Kalidindi the win.

Whitworth will end the 2014 season on Saturday with a match at home against Linfield.
