SPOKANE, Wash. – Visiting George Fox swept the doubles and used that margin for a 6-3 win over Whitworth in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates dropped to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the NWC. The Bruins improved to 3-2, 3-1.
Justin McClain and Chris Lilly got GFU on the board with an 8-3 win over Drew Brigham and Shane Sandlin at #1 doubles. Preston Mann and Chace Stalcup topped Troy Patterson and Blake Miller 8-6 at #2 doubles. Finally, Mitchell Miyashiro and Nick Grafton doubled up John Talbot and Matt Goebel 8-4 at #3 doubles for a 3-0 Bruin lead.
Even though the teams split the six singles matches, George Fox clinched the team win by taking the first two points in singles. McClain beat Brigham 6-3, 6-3 at #1, while Lilly edged Chris Engelmann 6-4, 6-4 at #2.
Talbot and Miller got Whitworth on the board with wins at #3 and #4 singles, respectively. Talbot outlasted Mann 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) and Miller beat Stalcup 7-5, 6-2.
Grafton defeated Goebel 6-4, 6-2 at #6 for GFU and Sandlin gave the Pirates their final point with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) win over Miyashiro at #5.
Whitworth returns to action next weekend, hosting Pacific (Ore.) on Saturday.
