McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Whitworth men's tennis team completed a weekend sweep in Oregon with a 9-0 win at Linfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates, who improved to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the NWC, led 2-0 before the first serve of the day as the Wildcats (0-2, 0-2) came into the contest with only five players.
Matt Goebel and Blake Miller made fairly quick work of Micah Roos and Tim Hawkins at #2 doubles, winning 8-3. But Drew Brigham and Shane Sandlin had to go the distance for an 8-6 win over Kelsey Rosborough and Lukas Kleinman at #1 doubles.
Only one of the singles matches had to go beyond two sets. Chris Engelmann claimed that win for Whitworth by rallying from behind for a 2-6, 7-6 (6), 1-0 (11-9) win over Rosborough.
John Talbot prevented the #3 singles match from going more than two sets by defeating Kleinman 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).
Meanwhile Brigham beat Roos 6-3, 6-3 at #1 and Miller topped Hawkins 6-2, 6-4 at #4. Sandlin blanked Nick Konen 6-0, 6-0 at #5 singles.
Whitworth returns home to host Lewis & Clark and George Fox next weekend at the Scotford Tennis Center.
