TACOMA, Wash. – Whitworth closed its men's tennis season with a 9-0 win at Puget Sound, giving the visiting Pirates a season sweep of the Loggers.
Whitworth finishes the season 6-13 overall, 5-7 in the Northwest Conference. UPS is 2-13, 1-10 with one match remaining.
The Bucs rolled to three victories in the doubles matches to take control of the contest. John Talbot and Troy Patterson won at #3 by a score of 8-0 while Cameron Williams and Drew Brigham earned an 8-3 win at #1. The closest of the three doubles matches was an 8-6 win over Drew Adams and Matt Goebel at #2 over Jake Peterson and Daniel Deuel.
Whitworth won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. The only one that went more than two was at #5 where Dustin McConnell defeated Abe Noyes 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Two Pirate seniors capped their careers with singles victories. Williams topped Michael Cutter 6-4, 6-3 at #1 and Micah Spaun rolled past John Stevens 6-1, 6-2 at #6.
Brigham won 6-3, 6-3 at #2 singles and Talbot earned a 6-1, 7-5 win at #3. Chris Engelmann also won by a 6-3, 6-3 score at #4.
