PARKLAND, Wash. – Pacific Lutheran rallied to a 5-4 win over visiting Whitworth in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Friday night after the Pirates had swept the three doubles matches.
The Lutes improved to 11-5 overall and 9-1 in the NWC while Whitworth dropped to 5-13, 4-7.
The Pirates appeared on the way to a breakthrough win after running out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play. Cameron Williams and Drew Brigham got the Bucs on the board with an 8-5 win over Jason Bower and Taylor Dickey at #1 doubles.
Both the second and third doubles matches ended in Whitworth's favor with an 8-6 score. Matt Goebel and Drew Adams topped Luke Olson and Sam Angel at #2, while John Talbot and Troy Patterson edged Jake and Mitch Yannello at #3.
But Williams was the only Pirate to win his singles match. He defeated Bower 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at #1 singles.
Two of the other singles matches went three sets. PLU's Mitch Yannello beat Chris Engelmann 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 at #4 singles. Dickey slipped past Blake Miller 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 at #6 singles.
Whitworth will finish out its season on Saturday at Puget Sound.
