PASADENA, Calif. – Whitworth opened its traditional spring break trip to Southern California with a 7-2 win over Caltech in men's tennis on Monday afternoon.
The Pirates improved to 5-10 while the Beavers fell to 0-11.
The teams played singles first on Monday and Whitworth grabbed a 4-2 lead. Cameron Williams took a 6-4, 6-1 win over Devashish Joshi at #1 singles while John Talbot and Dustin McConnell earned straight sets wins at #5 and #6 singles. Blake Miller pulled out a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win at #4 singles.
Chris Engelmann dropped a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 loss at #3 singles, while Drew Brigham fell in the #2 singles match.
Whitworth then put the competition away by sweeping the doubles matches, but all were close. Miller and Troy Patterson clinched the team victory with an 8-5 win at #3 doubles over Rushikesh Joshi and Dylan Schultz. Williams and Brigham pulled out a hard-fought 9-8 (7-2) win over Luka Mernik and Devashish Joshi.
Whitworth returns to action on Thursday with a non-counting exhibition match against College of the Desert in Indian Wells. The Pirates will conclude their trip on Friday with a match at Occidental.
