SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth men's tennis hits the road this weekend to wrap up the first half of Northwest Conference play. With hopes of extending their winning streak to six, the Pirates visit Puget Sound on Saturday and Willamette on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.

The Pirates: The Bucs (4-2 overall, 4-1 NWC) earned an NWC home sweep last weekend, beating both Lewis & Clark and George Fox for the first time since 2016. The warm and sunny weather also provided an opportunity to play outdoors for the first time this season.
On Saturday, the Whitworth men defeated the River Otters 5-2. Matt Froslan and Matt Hossack stormed back from a three-point deficit to win 7-6 and secure the doubles decision. The Bucs won four singles matches, two of which in three sets. Matthew Morrison clinched the victory with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 win in the No. 1 position.
The Pirates closed the weekend with a 6-1 win over visiting George Fox. Whitworth swept doubles to open the match and earned five dominant two-set singles wins. Henry Preacher clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win on the No. 2 court. Connor Judson remained unbeaten against NWC opponents (5-0) with 6-0, 6-3 win in the No. 4 spot.
Ryan Ashley, who competed in the No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles positions, earned NWC Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week on March 2 after victories in all four of his matches on the weekend.
The Opponents: Puget Sound (0-7, 0-5 NWC) heads into this week still looking to earn its first match win of the season. Last weekend, the Loggers fell 6-1 on the road at Willamette. PS is led by 2025 first team All-NWC honoree Jason Rowe, who competes in the No. 1 singles and doubles positions. Rowe and doubles teammate Jackson Stumpf have not played in the team's last two matches. First-year Gavin Dille has stepped into the No. 1 spot each of the last two weeks. Whitworth has won the last 20 matches its played against the Loggers.
Willamette (1-4, 1-4 NWC) is coming off its lone win of the season last weekend against Puget Sound. The Bearcats will visit Whitman on Saturday before heading to Spokane on Sunday. AJ Avansino and Hudson Snyder make up the top doubles duo with Avansino holding the top singles spot. Jake Bronson plays in the No. 2 singles position. The Pirates have won the last 15 matches played against Willamette.
The NWC Race: Whitman (5-0) holds the top spot with Whitworth (4-1) a match behind. George Fox and Pacific (Ore.) are each 3-2 while Linfield (2-3) and Lewis & Clark (2-3) are looking to make a jump. Willamette (1-4) and Puget Sound (0-5) round out the standings.
The top four teams in the NWC standings will earn a spot in the NWC Tournament. The tournament will be hosted by the regular season champion.
The Coach: Daniel Redfern enters his third season as head coach of the Whitworth men's tennis program in 2025-26. He holds a 15-29 overall record and 13-13 Northwest Conference mark. Redfern was a two-year standout player for the Pirates, earning first team All-Northwest Conference honors in 2011 and 2012 after transferring to Whitworth from Skagit Valley College.
Looking ahead: The Whitworth men begin the second half of Northwest Conference action with a road match at Whitman on March 14.
