Carthage led 9-1 at halftime and 11-1 in the third quarter before the Pirates score six straight goals to pull within 11-7 with eight minutes left in the match. The Bucs won 21 of the 29 draw controls, ten of those by Megan Whitman. Campbell Vincent scored a season-high seven goals, only one off tying her school record of eight in one match. Rose Frezza had four goals and one assist.
The Opponents: Kalamazoo College is a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Hornets come into Thursday's game 2-4 this season, following a 23-5 loss to Kenyon (Ohio) last Friday. Senior A Ella Spooner has 18 goals and six assists this season, while junior A Tessa Fuller adds 12 goals and seven assists. Junior GK Kaitlyn Grice stops 35.5% of the shots she faces. Whitworth has never played a member of the MIAA in lacrosse.
Chapman University (Calif.) is 3-3 this season. The Panthers fell 14-7 at Redlands last Saturday in their most recent contest. They host Edgewood (Wis.) on Tuesday night before making the trip to Washington this weekend. Senior A Ada Carr has 12 goals and eight assists, leading a roster deep with scoring threats. Fourteen different players have scored at least two goals for Chapman. The Pirates and Panthers have never played in lacrosse.

The Coach: Noelle Brouillard is in her eighth season as head coach at Whitworth, the only seasons the Pirates have been a varsity program. Since the restart following COVID, Whitworth has shown dramatic improvement each year. The Bucs went 0-10 in 2021. They won five times in 2022, went 6-12 in 2023 and broke through with a 12-6 record in 2024, including an 8-4 mark in the NWC. Last season the Pirates finished 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the NWC, tied for fourth place.
Brouillard came to Whitworth from the University of Scranton, where she was the top women's lacrosse assistant coach for two seasons. Scranton had a 22-13 record over the two years Brouillard served as assistant coach. The Royals advanced to the Landmark Conference tournament championship game in 2017 and finished with an 11-6 record. She played for four seasons at Allegheny College (Pa.), where she was a two-time team captain in 2012 and 2013.
Looking ahead: Next week the Pirates will travel to California for non-conference contests at Occidental and Cal Lutheran on Wednesday and Thursday.
