The Pirates: The Bucs (0-2 overall, 0-1 NWC) battled NWC defending champion Whitman to open conference play last weekend. Whitworth fell 6-1, but showed positive trends against a talented opponent. Ryan Ashley and Henry Preacher trailed 5-2 in the No. 1 doubles match before storming back to a 7-6 (7-1) match win. It was the team's first doubles match win of the season. Freshman Connor Judson made his mark as well, defeating Whitman's No. 4 singles player 6-4, 6-0 for his first victory as a Pirate.
The Opponents: Pacific (2-1, 2-0 NWC) heads into this weekend with two conference wins under its belt – a pair of 6-1 wins over Willamette and Puget Sound. The Boxer men were picked fourth in this season's NWC preseason poll. PAC returns the 2025 NWC Rookie of the Year Joshua Dela Cruz and second-team All-NWC player Alex Kinoshita. The Pirates and Boxers split their two matches last season, the latest being a 6-1 Whitworth win in Spokane on March 29.
Linfield (2-3, 2-0 NWC) also finished its first weekend of conference play with two wins. The Wildcats earned a sweep over both Puget Sound and Willamette. First team All-NWC player Brooks Lerfald returns to lead Linfield from primarily the No. 1 position. Lerfald and senior Zac Nakajima have proven to be a quality tandem with a 3-1 record as the Cats' top doubles pair. Whitworth won its first match 6-1 against Linfield in Spokane last season but fell 4-3 in a tight second match in McMinnville.
The Coach: Daniel Redfern enters his third season as head coach of the Whitworth men's tennis program in 2025-26. He holds an 11-29 overall record and 9-13 Northwest Conference mark. Redfern was a two-year standout player for the Pirates, earning first team All-Northwest Conference honors in 2011 and 2012 after transferring to Whitworth from Skagit Valley College.
Looking ahead: The Whitworth men return to Spokane to host Lewis & Clark on February 28 and George Fox on March 1.
