Whitworth swimming dominates at Willamette

SALEM, Ore. – The Whitworth University men won all 11 events while the Pirate women won 10 events to sweep host Willamette University in a Northwest Conference swimming dual meet on Saturday.

Whitworth's men defeated the Bearcats 154-45 while the women won 152-52.

The Pirate men's depth was in fine form on Saturday.  Eight different swimmers won the nine individual events.  Only Braiden Alexander won more than one event, sweeping the distance freestyle races.  He won the 1,000-yard race in 10:05.03 and the 500 in 4:55.95.

The other freestyle wins went to Samuel Draeger in the 200 (1:54.27), Mason Groth in the 100 (49.76) and Nathanael Van Liew in the 50 (21.51). 

Kai Jon Hayashida won the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.36), Henry Brewster won the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.34), Vincent McNabb won the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.32) and Preston Wolf won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.78).

Hayashida (back) and Brewster (fly) teamed with Alex Popov (breaststroke) and Parker Dangleis (free) on the winning 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:33.21.

Austin Elwyn joined Dangleis, Groth and Van Liew on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay (3:11.83).

Kallie Badry and Paige Dangleis each won a pair of events for the Whitworth women.  Badry took the 200 free in 2:01.63 and the 500 free in 5:22.63.  Dangleis won the 50 free (25.55) and the 200 back (2:14.76).

Alisa King won the 1,000 free in 11:26.62, while Isabella Hoopes won the 100 free in 57.23.

Hailey Freeman was first in the 200 I.M. (2:21.99) and Molly Konop won the 200 breaststroke (2:29.68).

Dangleis (back), Konop (breaststroke), Laura Inwards (fly) and Megan Bonikowsky (free) won the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:12.65. 

Paige Orlando, Mya Granger, Freeman and Konop closed the meet with a victory in the 400 free relay in 3:55.54.

The Pirate teams will return to action next Friday and Saturday against Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound at the Megan Thompson Aquatic Center.
