Swim teams sweep at Linfield in return from break

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Whitworth swimming teams returned from an extended break and swept host Linfield in a pair of Northwest Conference dual meets on Friday night.

The Pirate women won seven events and defeated the Wildcats 135-70.  The men also won seven of 11 events and defeated Linfield 123-81.  The Bucs had not competed since a dual meet at Pomona-Pitzer on December 16th.

Paige Dangleis won two individual events and led off the winning 200-yard medley relay to lead Whitworth's women.  She was followed by Molly Konop, Grace Esteban and Megan Bonikowsky to a winning time of 1:50.92 in the medley relay.  Dangleis went on to win the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.64 and the 100-yard freestyle in 54.61.

Kallie Badry also won a pair of events for the Pirates.  She swept the distance freestyle events, taking the 1,650-yard free in 17:52.91 and the 500 in 5:21.72.

Konop took first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.95, edging teammate Isabella Hoopes (1:09.23).  Hoopes took first in the 400-yard individual medley earlier with a time of 4:41.00.

Nathanael Van Liew led Whitworth's men with a pair of individual victories while also anchoring the winning medley relay.  Kai Hayashida led off the relay, followed by Alex Popov and Van Liew to a winning time of 1:34.18.

Van Liew went on to win both the 50-yard freestyle (21.24) and the 100 breaststroke (59.42).  He edged Popov by only two-tenths (59.62). 

Parker Dangleis won the men's 200 freestyle in 1:46.68.  Henry Brewster touched first in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.28.  Hayashida took first place in the 100-yard backstroke (53.58).  Preston Wolf won the 500 free in 4:58.61.

Whitworth will complete its trip to Oregon with a meet at Willamette on Saturday.
