Box Score LONGVIEW, Texas. – The Whitworth men's tennis team began its three-match non-conference trip to Texas with a narrow 4-3 loss at LeTourneau University on Monday afternoon.
The Pirates dropped their third consecutive match and moved to 3-8 overall (3-5 NWC) while the Yellowjackets moved to 6-8.
Whitworth claimed the doubles point after wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. Matt Hossack and Colby Cinqmars paired for the first time this season and quickly took down their opponents 6-1. Matthew Morrison and Ryan Ashley paired for a 6-3 win in the first position to secure the point.
Each of the first three singles matches went to a third set and none went the Pirates' way. Morrison and Ashley both dropped their first set 6-2 and came back to win the second set 6-4. Morrison fell 10-6 in a third set tiebreaker and Ashley fell 10-5. Matt Froslan won his first set 6-3 but dropped the second 6-4 and was edged 10-8 in the tiebreaker. Needing to win each of the remaining singles matches, Hossack defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-3 and Landon LaBrie earned a 6-3, 6-0 commanding win to tie the match at three. In the No. 5 position, the Yellowjacket's Diego Maldonado took down Colby Cinqmars 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 5 position to secure a LeTourneau victory.
Whitworth will continue the trip with a match at East Texas Baptist on Tuesday at noon pacific time.
