SPOKANE, Wash. – After a weekend off, the Whitworth University lacrosse team gets back in action at the WhitLax Classic in Walla Walla this coming weekend.  The Pirates will take on Lewis & Clark on Saturday at 2:00 pm, then will face Corban on Sunday at 11:00 am.

Check the Whitworth women's lacrosse schedule for live links to this weekend's matches.

The Pirates: Whitworth opened the 2024 season with a 21-5 win over Eastern Oregon on Feb. 17.  The Pirates broke open a 4-3 match with 17 straight goals.  Rebecca Irwin had four goals and three assists (7 points), career-highs in all three categories for one match.  Sage Fosnock played the first 56 minutes and allowed only five goals while making three saves.

Milestone Opener:  Whitworth won its season opener for the first time in school history.  The Pirates started playing lacrosse in 2019 and had never won the first match of the season until 2024.  The 16-goal margin of victory was also the largest-ever for the Bucs, surpassing the 14-goal margin during a 19-5 win over Whitman in 2020.

Hot Start:  Three first year Pirates got off to a hot start to their Whitworth careers against EOU.  Campbell Vincent, Kenison Turner and Jordyn Bennett all posted hat tricks with three goals apiece in their first contest as Pirate lacrosse players.

WhitLax Classic:  The WhitLax Classic is co-sponsored by Whitworth and Whitman.  The schools alternate who hosts the tournament each season.  Whitworth hosted the classic in 2023 when Southwestern (Texas) and Multnomah (Ore.) were the other two schools.  Whitman hosts L&C and Corban this season.

The Opponents: Lewis & Clark College is a Northwest Conference member school, but the Pioneers are playing an independent schedule during their first season as a varsity program.  L&C is 0-3 so far in 2024, but the first two losses were closely played contests in Minnesota.  They lost at Hamline 11-7 and at Augsburg 11-10.  First-year attacker Sage Swegle has eight goals and four assists so far this season.

Corban has not played an official match yet in 2023.  The Warriors finished 3-4 during an abbreviated schedule in 2023.  Whitworth and Corban have played once before and the Warriors won 18-6 at the WhitLax Classic in Walla Walla in 2022.

Coming up next: Whitworth will travel to Oregon to open Northwest Conference play on March 9-10 at Linfield and defending NWC champion George Fox.
