SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth University men won all 11 events on the way to a 147-52 victory over visiting George Fox in a Northwest Conference swimming dual on Saturday at the Megan Thompson Aquatic Center. The Pirate women were nearly as dominant, taking first place in nine events on the way to a 116-69 victory over the Bruins.
Whitworth's men improved to 5-0 in NWC dual meets this season, while the women improved to 3-2 with their third straight victory.
As they have all season, Zachary Washburn and Isaiah Ross led the Pirate men with two individual wins apiece, and each was part of a winning relay.
Washburn won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:58.91, then cruised to a first place finish in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.52. Washburn set the Whitworth team record in the 100 free earlier this season with a time of 44.41. He closed the meet by leading off the first place 400-yard freestyle relay. Washburn was joined by Haden Keener, Mason Self and Noah Clark for a time of 3:18.59.
Ross swam the butterfly leg on the opening 400-yard medley relay for the Pirates. Carl McNabb (back), Brody Faser (breaststroke) and Ryan Burch (free) joined in for a time of 3:38.52. Ross added a win in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.37. He won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:54.56.
Jett Joncich won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:42.36), Keener took first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.54) and Burch won the 50-yard freestyle (21.90). Burch was just off of his season-best mark (21.80).
McNabb led a 1-2-3 Pirate finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.91), while Faser touched first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.32), giving Whitworth first place in all 11 events.
Chamelle Abringe, Carly Hoff and Eve Ihde all won twice for the Pirate women and all were part of a winning relay.
Sarah Doncevich, Grace Oster, Ihde and Hoff opened the meet with a winning time of 4:17.74 in the 400 medley relay. Doncevich, Jillian Larrabee, Taylor Thorne and Abringe finished the meet by touching first in the 400 free relay (3:56.33).
Abringe took first place in the 200 freestyle (2:05.20) and 200 butterfly (2:19.52). As she has all season, Hoff dominated the 50 free (25.29) and 100 freestyle (55.62). Ihde won both the 200 I.M. (2:23.19) and the 500 freestyle (5:50.40).
Doncevic won the 200 backstroke in 2:19.20.
Whitworth will travel to compete at Pacific (Ore.) and Linfield in a pair of Northwest Conference dual meets next weekend.
