SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth swimming teams returned to Northwest Conference competition with a sweep of visiting Lewis & Clark in women's and men's dual meets on Friday night at the Megan Thompson Aquatic Center.
Chamelle Abringe, Sarah Doncevic and Carly Hoff won two individual events apiece to lead the Pirate women to a 104-81 victory over the Pioneers. Isaiah Ross and Zachary Washburn also won two individual events each in the men's 143-54 win.
Abringe put in a solid night's work with victories in two of the three longest races. She went 19:29.77 to touch first in the 1,650-yard freestyle and then posted a winning time of 5:04.11 in the 400-yard individual medley. Abringe led off the winning 200-yard freestyle relay at the end of the meet. She was joined by Taylor Thorne, Jillian Larrabee and Doncevic for a time of 1:44.90.
Doncevic returned to action after missing last weekend's meets due to illness. She won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:08.95 and took first in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.75.
Hoff anchored the opening 200-yard medley relay to a winning time of 1:55.73. She was joined by Thorne, Grace Oster and Larrabee. Hoff went on to sweep the 50-yard freestyle (25.33) and 100-yard freestyle (55.93).
Whitworth's women won eight of the 11 events.
The Pirate men won nine of the 11 events on their way to victory, including both relays.
Carl McNabb, Brody Faser, Ross and Washburn ran away with the opening medley relay with a time of 1:37.13. Whitworth took the top two places in that event.
Ross went on to win the 200 freestyle (1:46.82) and 100-yard butterfly (52.33). Washburn took first place in the 50 freestyle (21.30) and the 100-yard breaststroke (59.82).
Noah Clarke placed first in the 1,650 freestyle in 17:17.07. Faser posted a time of 4:22.15 to win the 400 I.M. Ryan Burch took first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.27.
Whitworth closed the night with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay. Burch, Mason Self, Clarke and Haden Keener went 1:29.20 to win by just over one second.
Whitworth will host George Fox on Saturday morning (11:00 am) in the final home dual meet of the season.
