INDIANAPOLIS – Whitworth University's Ryan Grady tied for ninth place in the men's 200-yard individual medley on the opening night of competition at the 2022 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium.
Grady tied Oliver Schalet of Williams College for first place in the consolation finals of the 200 I.M. with a new Whitworth and Northwest Conference record time of 1:48.01. Grady's time broke the previous mark of 1:48.27 he set at last month's NWC Championship meet in Federal Way. Grady qualified 10th in the morning preliminaries with a time of 1:49.03.
Whitworth had another school record set on Wednesday when Emma Thompson went 2:06.50 in the preliminary heats of the women's 200 I.M. Her time was 28th in the morning prelims, so she did not advance to the evening heats. Yet her time still broke the previous Pirate record of 2:06.91 she set at last month's NWC Championships.
Zachary Washburn was Whitworth's third swimmer on Wednesday and he tied for 38th in the prelims of the men's 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.58.
Whitworth's men are currently in 26th place with eight points.
The Pirate men will compete in a pair of relays on Thursday, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay.
