TACOMA, Wash. – Ryan Grady has etched his name at least one more time in the Whitworth swimming record-book. The highly decorated Pirate swimming broke a long-standing mark in the men's 500-yard freestyle on Saturday at the Puget Sound last chance meet.
Competing by himself, essentially in a time trial, Grady went 4:29.62 to surpass the mark of 4:31.44 set by former Division III All-American Kevin Wang in March of 2003.
Grady now holds Whitworth records in the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard individual medley and 500 freestyle. He shares team records with three teammates in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard freestyle relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay. The records in the 200 free, 200 I.M., 400 free relay and 800 free relay are also Northwest Conference marks.
No other records or NCAA qualifying marks were accomplished on Saturday at the meet, which was attended just by Whitworth and Puget Sound.
Grady will complete a final time as a Pirate at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on March 16-19 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
