Zachary Washburn swims the 200 freestyle

Washburn leads Pirate men to team win

TACOMA, Wash. – Zachary Washburn led the Whitworth University men to a season opening win at the NWC Sprint Penthathlon on Friday night by winning three of the five individual events.  Carly Hoff led the Pirate women, who finished in fourth place.

All swimmers enter all five events, the 100-yard individual medley and 50 yards each in the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.  Washburn won the men's 100 I.M., the breaststroke and the freestyle.  He was runner-up in the butterfly and third in the backstroke.

The final men's team scores were: Whitworth 232.5, Linfield 172.5, Puget Sound 150, George Fox 85, Pacific Lutheran 81, Willamette 54.

Hoff was the top finisher for the Pirate women's team in three of the five events.  She was third in the 100 I.M., fourth in the butterfly, fifth in the breastroke and second in the freestyle (by five hundredths of a second).  Ashley Rush was third in the breaststroke. 

The final women's team scores were: Linfield 287, Pacific Lutheran 171, Puget Sound 123.5, Whitworth 105.5, George Fox 44, Pacific (Ore.) 30, Willamette 14.

The Pirates will compete at an unscored NWC relay meet on Saturday at Puget Sound.
