WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman scored three minutes into overtime to hand visiting Whitworth a 4-3 loss in Northwest Conference men's soccer action on Saturday.
Whitworth (3-6-1, 3-6-1 NWC) battled back from a 3-1 deficit, tying the match with just over three minutes to go in regulation, but Whitman (5-5-1, 5-5-1) sealed the game with a quick overtime goal.
Both sides were putting shots on frame all match, as both teams finished with double-digit shots on goal totals. The Blues edged the Pirates in shots (15-13) and shots on goal (12-10), but the Bucs created 12 corner kick chances compared to Whitman's one.
The first half saw three goals in a span of about 20 minutes as both sides put the goalkeepers to work early. Whitworth struck first with a goal from Chris Barry in the 15th minute to put the Pirates up 1-0. Johnathan Guglielmetti served a corner kick into the box and Barry headed in the close-range shot.
Jacob Barsher had a goal and two assists on the game for the Blues, beginning with a game-tying goal in the 22nd minute. Adam Joss gave Whitman the 2-1 lead in the 35th minute with a diving header that was assisted by Barsher and Riley Kraft.
The Blues extended their lead to 3-1 just three minutes into the second half. Kraft sent a pass along the top of the box to Carter Giles, who sent his shot into the lower right corner of the net.
Dominic Gusman cut the Pirate deficit to one in the 61st minute. Christian Pumpelly tapped a pass forward to Gusman in the box, who slid his shot by Whitman's goalkeeper.
The Pirates tied it up at 3-3 with just over three minutes to go in regulation, taking advantage of another corner kick. Guglielmetti recorded his second assist of the match, connecting with Ethan Kem at the near post to send the match into overtime.
Whitman ended the match three minutes into overtime as Kraft knocked in the game-winner after collecting a short pass in the box from Barsher. Kraft finished with a goal and two assists on the day.
Bo Broyles finished with a career-high eight saves for Whitworth, while Bernie Jones made six stops for Whitman.
The Pirates and Blues will conclude the 2020-21 season with another match tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
