TACOMA, Wash. - The Whitworth University men rallied into second place and the women finished third in the final team standings of the 2021 Logger Invitational hosted at the University of Puget Sound Aquatic Center.
Emma Thompson set another meet record and the Pirate women won the 400 freestyle relay to close the meet.
Thompson finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.41. She posted a time of 56.15 in the morning's preliminaries to break the Logger Invitational record in the event. The previous record was 56.19 set in 2018.
Whitworth's women closed the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Thompson led off and was followed by Sarah Doncevic, Jillian Larrabee and Carley Hoff.
Hoff finished as the runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. She went 24.41 in the 50 to finish .28 behind Jessica Ordaz of PLU. She went 1:58.06 in the 200. Both are season-best times.
Doncevic finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (59.56). Ryann Reid was fourth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:46.76.
The final women's team scores were: Redlands 724, Pacific Lutheran 682, Whitworth 662, Puget Sound 661, Whitman 636, Southwestern Oregon CC 526, College of Idaho 171, Soka University 82.
The Pirate men did not win an event on Sunday, but had enough depth and high finishes to rally from third place into second place in the final standings.Â
Whitworth finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Zachary Washburn, Ryan Grady, Jacob Goguen and Finn McClone went 3:05.83, which was only six-tenths of a second off the school record (3:05.21) set in 2016.Â
Washburn finished fourth in the 200 freestyle and second in the 50 freestyle. He went 1:43.51 in the 200 after posting a season-best mark of 1:42.60 in the morning preliminary heats. Washburn was runner-up in the 50 in 21.26, followed by Goguen in third place (21.87) and Ryan Burch in fifth (22.09).Â
Isaiah Ross was runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.44.Â
The closest event of the night came in the men's 100-yard breaststroke. Ryan Grady finished third for Whitworth in 57.52 as the top four places were separated by only .24 seconds. His time of 57.35 in the morning heats was the fastest of the event.
Ty Patterson tied for fifth place in the 100 backstroke in 54.33.   Connor Florey was fifth in the 400 I.M. in 4:15.07.Â
