TACOMA, Wash. – The Whitworth University women's swimming team is in second place, only three points out of first, while the Pirate men are in third place following the second day of competition at the Logger Invitational on Saturday.
Emma Thompson won two individual events, setting a meet record in the process, while Carly Hoff and Ashtyn Peterson also took first place for the Pirate women. Ryan Grady broke two meet records for the men's team.
Peterson was the first winner of the night for Whitworth. She dropped ten seconds from her season-best time and three-seconds from her previous lifetime best mark to win the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:27.78.
Thompson followed with a win in the 200-yard backstroke with a meet-record and season-best mark of 2:03.59. She broke the previous record of 2:05.66 set in 2019. Thompson also won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:08.83.
Carly Hoff sprinted to a time of 53.41 to win the 100-yard freestyle. Her time is the best in the NWC this season.
Whitworth finished second in both relay races. Hoff, Thompson, Sarah Doncevic and Jillian Larrabee went 1:38.44 in the 200-yard freestyle relay to open the night. They finished second to PLU by less than two-tenths of a second. Thompson, Peterson, Larrabee and Hoff finished second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:01.24, also to PLU.
Other top performances for the Whitworth women included Isabel Fetty in the 200-yard butterfly (5th in 2:17.65). Larrabee (27.07) and Hoff (27.11) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 50-yard butterfly. Doncevic (2:12.83) was fifth in the 200 backstroke. Jessica DeFiesta (32.41) was fifth in the 50-yard breaststroke.
The women's team scores through the second day of the meet are: Redlands 445, Whitworth 442, PLU 413, Puget Sound 412, Whitman 405, Southwestern Oregon CC 334, College of Idaho 96, Soka Univ. 62.
Ryan Grady broke two meet records on Saturday for the Pirate men. He rolled to a win in the 200 breaststroke in 2:02.14, edging out the previous meet record of 2:02.92 he set in 2018. Later on, Grady won the 200 I.M. in 1:51.39, topping the mark of 1:52.40 set by Linfield's Noah Cutting in 2016.
Whitworth's Zachary Washburn, Jacob Goguen, Camren Langdon and Grady went 1:25.25 as runners-up to SWOC (1:24.28) in the 200 free relay. Washburn, Grady, Isaiah Ross and Goguen (3:29.14) were third in the 400 medley relay to Southwestern Oregon and Whitman.
Zachary Bevans was runner-up in the 50 butterfly with a time of 22.61, losing by one one-hundredth of a second. Washburn finished third in the 100 freestyle in 46.04, while Goguen was fifth (47.30). Isaiah Ross was fifth in the 200 butterfly (1:56.74) and fifth in the 500 freestyle (4:46.95). Connor Florey took fourth in the 500 freestyle in 4:43.66. Finn McClone finished sixth in the 200 backstroke (1:59.55).
The men's team scores through Saturday are: Southwestern Oregon CC 549, Puget Sound 454, Whitworth 446, Whitman 435.5, Redlands 331, Pacific Lutheran 161, Coll. of Idaho 116, Soka 104.5.
The meet concludes on Sunday.
