Pirate women and men dominate Willamette

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth University women won all 14 events, while the Pirate men won 13 of 14 races on the way to a sweep of visiting Willamette University in a Northwest Conference swimming dual meet on Saturday.

Whitworth's women won 194-58 to improve to 1-2 in conference dual meets.  The men came out ahead 193-62 to remain unbeaten (3-0) against NWC foes. 

Emma Thompson won three individual races and led off the winning 200-yard medley relay to open the dual.  The Pirate relay of Thompson, Isabella Hackney, Sarah Doncevic and Carly Hoff won the 200 medley in a time of 1:51.29.

Thompson dominated all three of her individual races.  She was first in the 100-yard backstroke (57.14) by over five seconds, first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.92) by almost ten seconds and first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.84) be over nine seconds.

Ryann Reid, Ashtyn Peterson and Hoff all won a pair of individual races as well.  Reid was first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.96) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:23.70).  Peterson won both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.55) and 200-yard (2:37.69) breaststroke.  Hoff sprinted to wins in both the 50-yard freestyle (25.43) and 100-yard freestyle (56.11). 

Kailyn Dillon won the 1000-yard freestyle (11:55.34), Jessica DeFiesta won the 500-yard freestyle (5:44.76) and Doncevic won the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.84).

Doncevic, Reid, Mikaela White and Taylor Thorne closed the women's meet with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:58.05.

Ryan Grady, Connor Florey and Isaiah Ross all won a pair of individual events for the Pirates.  Grady was also on both winning relays.

Zachary Washburn, Grady, Ross and Ryan Burch won the 200 medley relay in 1:37.96, leading a 1-2 finish for the Pirates.

Grady went on to win both the 100 breaststroke (58.32) and 200 breaststroke (2:06.48).  Similarly, Ross won both the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.44) and the 100-yard butterfly (52.83).  Likewise, Florey won both distance freestyle races, 10:09.76 in the 1000 free and 4:56.13 in the 500 free.

Washburn posted a winning time of 1:56.67 in the 200 freestyle.  Ty Patterson won the 100 backstroke in 56.80.  Finn McClone was first in the 100 freestyle (48.40).  Jorgen Midboe took first in the 200 backstroke (2:05.56) and Andrew Lambert touched first in the 200 I.M. (2:02.81).

Washburn, McClone, Jacob Goguen and Grady closed the meet with a time of 3:14.43 in the 400 free relay.

Whitworth will return to action on December 3-5 at the Logger Invitational, hosted by the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.
