Pirate Men Win Sprint Meet; Women Take Second

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Whitworth won five of the ten events, the Pirate men finished first in the team competition and the women were a close second at the season opening Sprint Pentathlon, hosted by Pacific University on Friday night.

Each swimmer competed in the same five events, the 100-yard individual medley and 50-yards in each of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.

Ryan Grady won the 100 I.M. in 52.96, besting the second place swimmer by nearly two seconds. He won the 50 breaststroke in 27.17 and won the 50 back in 24.97. 

Isaiah Ross was runner-up by a tenth of a second in the 50 butterfly in 24.04.  Zachary Washburn finished second by two one-hundredths of a second in the 50 freestyle in 21.97.

The final men's team scores were: Whitworth 395.5, Pacific Lutheran 162.5, George Fox 154.5, Lewis & Clark 82.5, Willamette 68, Pacific (Ore.) 2.

Emma Thompson, competing in her first meet as a Pirate, won the 100 I.M. in 1:00.88.  She also took first in the 50 backstroke by nearly three seconds with a time of 26.59.  She was runner-up in the 50 butterfly (27.15) and runner-up in the 50 freestyle (25.24). 

The final women's team scores were: PLU 315.5, Whitworth 292, Pacific (Ore.) 98, George Fox 77.5, Willamette 46.5, Lewis & Clark 33.5.

The teams will be back in the pool on Saturday at George Fox with the NWC Relay Invitational.
