Whitworth Falls to Cal Lutheran in Weekend Finale

Box Score

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran broke an early tie with a five-run fourth inning on its way to producing 17 hits in a 14-5 victory over Whitworth on Sunday in California.

No. 10 Cal Lutheran (3-0) topped Whitworth (1-3) for the second time this weekend after taking an 11-5 win from the Pirates in the season opener on Friday.

Tied at 3-3 after three innings, the Kingsmen produced six hits in the fourth inning to open an 8-3 lead. Two hits and a hit by pitch loaded the bases to begin the inning before Cal Lutheran's Kyle Sanchez delivered a two-RBI single. Following a strikeout, Ramsey Abushahla had an RBI single and later scored on a two-RBI double by Collin Crowl.

The Kingsmen scored six more runs over the next three innings, while the Pirates struck for two runs in the seventh inning but were unable to make up the deficit.

Whitworth scored one run in each of the first three innings, while the Kingsmen pushed across one run in the first and two in the second frame.

In the first inning, Jeremy Druffel reached on an error and Matthew Nelson followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. A balk brought home Druffel before the inning ended.

After Cal Lutheran responded with a run to tie the game in the bottom of the inning, JT Phelan doubled with one out in the second inning and later scored on a single by Casey Isa as the Bucs regained the lead.

The Kingsmen responded once again in the bottom of the second as Sanchez produced the first of his four hits in the game, doubling home two runs to give Cal Lutheran a 3-2 advantage.

In the third inning Whitworth tied the game as Nelson's second double of the game brought home Druffel, who had singled and stole second before Nelson came to the plate.

Spencer Locati recorded an RBI in the seventh inning, reaching on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Druffel added an RBI single for the Pirates' second run of the frame.

Druffel was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI to finish the four-game weekend with nine hits. Nelson finished 2 for 5 with one RBI.

Sanchez led Cal Lutheran, finishing 4 for 4 with 7 RBIs. Leadoff hitter Justin Cana was 3 for 3 with four runs scored.

Cal Lutheran starter Marshall Pautsch earned the win, throwing five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) and five hits. Whitworth starter Michael Renner took the loss. Four Pirates combined in the relief effort.

Whitworth will play at Merkel Field for the first time next weekend as the Pirates host Eastern Washington in an exhibition doubleheader on Feb. 14.
