Cal Lutheran Tops Whitworth in Season Opener

Box Score

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran scored seven runs over the first two innings en route to an 11-5 win over Whitworth at Ullman Stadium in the season opener for both schools on Friday afternoon.

The Kingsmen, ranked at No. 10 in the preseason top 25 poll by D3baseball.com, put together three productive innings against the Pirates. Cal Lutheran scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and added three more in the second frame.

After Whitworth scored its first run in the top of the sixth inning, Cal Lutheran responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame to build an 11-1 lead. The Pirates rallied late with four runs over the final two innings but were unable to make up the deficit.

The first two batters for Cal Lutheran singled in the bottom of the first as the Kingsmen recorded five singles in the frame. A two-run, two-out triple by Cal Lutheran's Davey Casciola highlighted the offensive production in the bottom of the second inning.

Whitworth plated its first run in the sixth inning after Spencer Locati doubled to right, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, then scored on an RBI single by Joshua Davis. The Kingsmen responded in the bottom half of the inning with four runs via three hits and two walks, highlighted by a two-run double from Ramsey Abushahla.

The Pirates scored three runs in the eighth inning as Jeremy Druffel doubled before Locati walked and Davis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Matthew Nelson followed with a two-run single to right field and Joel Condreay added a two-out RBI single later in the inning.

Two walks and single loaded the bases for Whitworth again in the ninth inning. A wild pitch brought home Zach Thibault to make the score 11-5 before Cal Lutheran was able to end the threat and close out the game.

Whitworth was led by Davis, who finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Locati was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and three walks while Nelson was 1 for 5 with two RBIs.

Cal Lutheran's Scott Peters allowed one run and four hits over seven innings on the mound to earn the win. Cory Mack started for Whitworth and took the loss. Nick Scourey, Tyler VonDracek and Arory Milyard all saw action in relief.

The Pirates return to the diamond Saturday with a doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer. The first game is set to begin at 11 a.m. The Pirates conclude the California road trip with a rematch at Cal Lutheran on Sunday.
