St. Paul, Minn. - The Whitworth men's soccer team scored three second-half goals, including two by Micheal Ramos, to break a halftime tie and top the University of St. Thomas, 4-2, on Monday afternoon.

Whitworth concluded its season-opening trip to the Midwest undefeated with the victory, following wins against Millikin University and Wheaton College at the Bob Baptista Invitational in Illinois.

With the match tied at 2-2 in the second half, Karl Muelheims scored the go-ahead goal off a corner kick in the 72nd minute, which was assisted by Rylan Berriman. Ramos doubled the lead for Whitworth in the 84th minute, scoring his fourth goal of the season on a free kick.

Ramos' first goal of the half came in the 52nd minute and was assisted by Berriman as well, giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead. St. Thomas tied the match shortly after on a header goal by Christian Elliehausen in the 57th minute, marking the second time in the match the teams scored within minutes of each other.

St. Thomas had opened the scoring in the 11th minute as Ryan Mooney scored on a header from a corner kick. The Pirates answered moments later in the 14th minute as Samual Jarrett scored off a cross from Ramos, leading to a 1-1 halftime tie.

Tony Watters had three saves for Whitworth while Mitchell Wolff made five saves for St. Thomas. The Pirates took 16 shots compared with 14 for St. Thomas and held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. The Tommies had a 6-5 advantage on corner kicks.

The Pirates open their home schedule against Corban University on Saturday, Sept. 6. The next weekend Whitworth will travel to Salem, Ore. for a neutral site match against UC Santa Cruz. The Northwest Conference schedule begins for Whitworth on Sept. 20 when the Pirates host Linfield before taking on Willamette the following day.
