Ramos Nets Overtime Goal to Lift Whitworth over Pacific

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. - Micheal Ramos scored the match-winning goal on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box in the 104th minute as Whitworth edged Pacific, 1-0 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

Whitworth (12-1-2, 7-1-2 NWC) notched a key victory to keep pace in the NWC title race and remain just behind Puget Sound and Willamette in the conference standings. Pacific (5-9-1, 2-7-1) lost by a deficit of one goal for the third-straight match.

Jonah Snyder was fouled just outside the 18-yard box with a little under seven minutes remaining in the second overtime, giving the Pirates a set piece opportunity. Ramos took the kick, putting top spin on his shot to bend the ball over the wall of Pacific players and past a diving goalkeeper into the upper left side of the net.

The match-winner for Ramos was his league-leading 13th goal of the season, and prompted a dog pile from the Whitworth team and fans who immediately rushed the field following the goal. Video of the goal can be seen here on the Whitworth Pirates Instagram account.

"From that position, that's actually the most difficult place to score a free kick," head coach Morgan Cathey said. "You have to get it up over the wall, and you still have to hit it with enough pace to where the goalkeeper isn't going to get there."

The Pirates held possession for a significant majority of the match, launching a season-high 43 shots against the Boxers. Whitworth put 14 of those shots on goal. The Boxers were held to four shots and were unable to generate a shot on goal. Whitworth also took 12 corner kicks compared with two for the Boxers.

"That's the fun part of soccer," Cathey said. "Both teams can be in it even if you play great -- the game was there for them to win just as much as it was for us. It was fantastic, though, to win in that style."

Whitworth's shot advantage included a 22-1 edge in the first half. The Pirates generated nine shots on goal in the opening half but were held scoreless.

"I thought the first half of the game was some of the best soccer we've played all year," Cathey said. "To get out at halftime and have nine shots on goal -- and all of them were quality chances."

Pacific goalkeeper Leyton Thommasen recorded 13 saves in the match before Ramos found the back of the net in overtime.

Whitworth goalkeeper Timmy Costa earned his third shutout of the season. It was the fourth shutout win overall for the Pirates, who have won each of those matches by a final score of 1-0. The Pirates improved their overtime record this season to 2-0-2.

Whitworth hosts George Fox on Sunday during Senior Day in the final regular-season home match of the season. The Pirates conclude the regular season with three consecutive road contests.
