Box Score SALEM, Ore. – Jeff Roland's goal less than three minutes into the match gave Evergreen State a 1-0 non-conference victory over Whitworth in men's soccer on Saturday afternoon at Willamette University.
The win gives the Geoducks a record of 2-1-1 while the Pirates fall to 1-1-1.
Roland's goal, which was unassisted, came from 30 yards away on the very first shot by either team in the contest.
Whitworth played its entire bench against the NAIA school, yet still outshot Evergreen 14-8, including a 10-2 shot advantage in the second half when the Pirates dominated possession. But Geoduck keeper Collin Harlow made eight save in the game, including six in the second period, to preserve the shutout.
Shane Nishioka-Healy and Timmy Costa split time in net for Whitworth. Nishioka-Healy made two saves while Costa made one stop.
The Pirates will take on UC Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoon, also at Willamette.
