Men's golf rallies on day 2 at PLU Invite

DUPONT, Wash. – The Whitworth men's golf team improved by 17 strokes from Monday to Tuesday to finish fifth overall at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational played at the Home Course.

The primary Pirate lineup posted a 304 (+16) during Monday's round but improved to 287 (-1) on Tuesday.  Whitworth was seven-under at one point during Tuesday's round and within six strokes of the team lead before the momentum slowed over the final four holes.

The Pirate B squad improved by 18 strokes from Monday to Tuesday 318-300 to finish 11th out of 13 teams.

The final team scores were: Willamette 576 (E), Pacific Lutheran 578, Bellevue CC 588, Linfield 589, Whitworth 591, George Fox 600, Columbia Basin Coll. 608, Puget Sound 609, PLU B 610, Willamette B 612, Whitworth B 618, Puget Sound B 637, George Fox B 648.

Matthew Durkin led the Pirates for the third straight tournament.  The senior shot 75-70 – 145 (+1) to finish tied for 8th place with two other players.  PLU's Soren Bostrom (73-66 – 139) posted a -5 to win the medal, one stroke ahead of his Lute teammate Koen Solis (71-69 – 140).

Peyton Simonds (76-70 – 146) finished one stroke behind Durkin, tied for 11th place.  Max Hosfeld (76-75 – 151) tied for 29th place, while Andy Hobson (80-72 – 152) tied for 33rd.  Tanner Smith (77-81 – 158) tied for 52nd.

Kallen Maioh (78-73 – 151 / 29th tie), Ethan Loghry (77-78 – 155 / 39th tie), and Elijah Clendening (81-74 – 155 / 39th tie) led the Whitworth B team.

The Pirates will now turn their attention to the 2025 Northwest Conference Fall Classic, which will take place October 12-13 in Lake Oswego, Oregon.
