Pirate teams take 2nd at NWC T&F Championships

NEWBERG, Ore. – Whitworth University finished second to host George Fox in both the men's and women's divisions of the 2024 Northwest Conference Track & Field Championships on Saturday.

The men finished within 30 points of the Bruins while the women were just barely 30 points behind.

Solo Hines won the men's 100-meter dash in 10.67, claiming first place for that event for the third year in a row.  On Friday he had established a new school record and meet record of 10.58 in the prelims.   Hines went on to finish second in the men's 200-meter dash with a new school record time of 21.38, as Puget Sound's Alexander Rhodes won in 21.27.  Hines opened the meet by anchoring the Pirates' 400-meter relay to a runner-up finish in 42.00. 

Cooper Rolfs finished fourth in the 400-meter dash with a personal record time of 50.41.  Kainoa Figueira was third in the men's 800 meters in 1:55.25 with Isaac Akiyama (1:57.01) fifth.  Akiyama was also seventh in the 1,500 meters (3:56.03) with Jack Ireton eighth (3:56.41). 

Whitworth's men got within three points of George Fox with two events left after the men's 200, but the Bruins had a strong 5,000 meters and won the 1,600 meter relay.  Whitworth finished fourth in 3:21.62.

Zaanan Bane earned his second win of the weekend by taking first in the men's triple jump with a distance of 45'-5.75".  He also took fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.66 on Saturday after winning the long jump on Friday.

Daniel Watts finished third in the men's 400-meter hurdles in 56.22, while Cameron Lantagne (57.29) was seventh.

Cody Wheeler won the men's javelin throw for the second straight season with a distance of 206'-11".  After also winning the hammer throw on Friday, Wheeler was selected as the NWC's Field Athlete of the Year.  Cameron Ditter (171'-5") was seventh in the javelin.  The Pirates had four scorers in the men's shot put:  Eddie Vu (46'-10.25") was third, Kenai Herrick (PR – 46'-6.75") was fourth, Alex Smith (45'-5") was fifth and Wheeler (44'-0") was eighth.

The final men's team scores were: George Fox 221, Whitworth 192, Pacific Lutheran 104, Linfield 70, Pacific (Ore.) 67, Puget Sound 62, Willamette 53, Lewis & Clark 50, Whitman 0.

The Pirate women had four event champions on Saturday:  Amelia Hewson, Alison Ball, Renee Tiumalu and the women's 400 relay.

Hewson won the women's 100-meter hurdles for the fourth year in a row with a time of 14.49.  Bree Rawls was seventh in 15.95, one of several events in which she made her mark this weekend.

Ball came from behind to win the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.97 while Jordan Lungo took eighth in 26.05.

In the 100-meter dash, Ball finished second (12.16), Hewson took third (12.28) and Lungo fourth (12.30).  All established new personal records in that event.  Isabelle Pereira was seventh in 12.74.

Lungo , Hewson, Pereira and Ball won the women's 400-meter relay with a time of 47.25, the second straight win for the Pirates in that event.

Lily Jones finished fifth in the women's 1,500 in 4:47.03 and was sixth in the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:20.51.  Madelyn Buckley finished fourth in the women's 5,000 meters with a PR of 18:04.95, one day after finishing third in the 10K with another PR.

Emily Brown was runner-up in the women's 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.11, despite taking a tumble on the final hurdle.

In the field, Tiumalu repeated as the champion of the women's shot with a new school record distance of 44'-7.5".  Amblessed Okemgbo (40'-7.75") was fourth and Izzy Boyd (38'-6.25") was eighth.  Devyn Chelin finished second in the women's javelin with a new PR of 139'-11".  Natalie Ellis (PR – 125'-5") was fifth and Logan Spencer (PR – 122'-6") was sixth.  Brown

Rawls was the runner-up in the high jump after clearing 5'-3", while Brianna Tira was fourth with the same height.  The tie was broken by number of misses.  Rawls also finished fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 36'-0.75", a PR.  Tira was seventh (35'-5.75").

The final women's team scores were: George Fox 202.5, Whitworth 172, Pacific 98, Lewis & Clark 75, Linfield 74.5, Puget Sound 68, Pacific Lutheran 65, Willamette 62, Whitman 2.
