Pirates net three wins, six seconds places at Sam Adams Classic

SPOKANE, Wash. – Just a few days after essentially competing in an intra-squad meet, the Whitworth track and field teams took on regional NCAA Division I foes on Friday at the Sam Adams Classic and came up with several impressive performances.

Whitworth's women won three events and had a pair of runner-up finishes, while the Pirate men posted four second place ribbons against teams from Gonzaga, Eastern Washington and Idaho.

As happens in almost every meet, Whitworth's throwers led the way for the women.  Amblessed Okemgbo won the discus with a throw of 151'-11" while Madison Carr won the hammer throw with a personal record distance of 170'-7".

Kylie Loveless took second place in the shot put with a mark of 44'-6.25" with Okemgbo second and Carr third.  Loveless was also third in the javelin throw (126'-7") with Devin Chelin fourth (126'-2").

Shaloma McCay reached 37'-4.5" to take sixth in the triple jump and Briana Tira went 17'-1.5" for eighth in the long jump.

On the track the Whitworth women ran unopposed in the 4x100 relay but still posted a season-best time of 48.53.  The Pirate women were second in the 4x400 relay with another season-best time of 4:07.22.

In the women's 5,000-meters, Kezlie Thygesen took second (17:52.97) with Lily Jones third (18:01.12) and Ashlyn Dary fourth (18:11.16). 

Emily Brown took third place in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.08.

On the men's side of the ledger, Cody Wheeler surpassed 200 feet in the javelin throw for the first time this season, taking second place with a mark of 202'-2".  Eddie Vu finished third in the discus (162'-3") and fourth in the shot put (49'-9.25"). 

Luke McCorkle hit 21'-10.75" to take fifth in the long jump.

The Whitworth men's 4x400 relay went a season-best time of 4:20.23 to finish second.  The sprint relay took fourth place in 41.61.

Cooper Rolfs finished as runner-up in the 400-meter dash with a personal record time of 49.44.  London Hayley took second place in the 5,000 with a season-best time of 14:56.46. 

Camden Schmidt posted a season-best time in the 200-meter dash (21.94) and Connor Hylton did the same in the 110-meter hurdles (16.91).  Hyton also took fourth in the 400 hurdles in 57.92.

Whitworth will return to action on Saturday, March 28 at the Shotwell Invitational hosted by the University of Puget Sound.
