TACOMA, Wash. – Competing with a partial squad across two states to cap off spring break week, the Whitworth track and field teams still posted strong performances on Saturday.
The Pirate women won four individual events at the Peyton-Shotwell Invitational hosted by Puget Sound.
Amblessed Okemgbo was a double-winner, taking first place in both the shot put (43'-7.25") and the discus throw (152'-5"). Devin Chelin won the women's javelin (129'-9"). Claire Nardella cleared 10'-4" to finish third in the pole vault.
Lily Jones won the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:20 with Isa Higgins taking third place (2:21.72).
Bella Tolen hit personal records in both the 100-meter dash (12.79) and 200-meter dash (26.37).
Cooper Rolfs led the Pirate men at the Peyton-Shotwell meet with a runner-up finish in the 400-meter dash with a personal record time of 48.91. He just missed another PR in the 200-meters (22.49).
Connor Hylton took third place in the men's 400-meter hurdles in 57.56.
Tristan Hiller was runner-up in the men's javelin (171'-2") and Kenai Herrick was third in the men's shot put (46'-3.25").
Whitworth's men got a pair of victories at the Pacific Open in Forest Grove, Oregon. Eddie Vu took first place in the discus throw with a mark of 173'-3" and was runner-up in the shot put (48'-10.75"). Cody Wheeler won the men's hammer throw, hitting 168'-7".
Brianna Tira was the only Pirate woman at Pacific and she was runner-up in the high jump while tying a season-best at 5'-2.25". She was also fifth in the long jump (15'-11.5").
The Pirates will be back at full force this coming Friday at the Whitworth Peace Meet.
